Roanoke College in Roanoke, Virginia

Roanoke College, a private educational institution located in Virginia, offers several educational programs in the liberal arts. It has a diverse culture with almost 30 countries and 40 states representing its student population. Founded near Staunton, VA in 1842, pastors David Bittle and Christopher Baughman led the realization of this vision. In 1853, Virginia established the Roanoke College. It was dubbed as one of the oldest Lutheran colleges in the US. The institution grew in size and population under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Bittle.

Roanoke College is given accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to offer degrees in business administration, science, and arts. The college has over 30 majors and 57 minors and concentrations. Every year, Roanoke welcomes more than 30 first-year students and sophomores to be part of their Honors Program. Members of the Honors Program are expected to complete the Honors Curriculum and are given a wide variety of learning programs, including lectures and service projects.

The college competes in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference of the NCAA Division III. Their athletic team is collectively known as the "Maroons," with maroon and gray as their official color. The Maroons play in ten women's sports and nine in men's sports. Roanoke's men's lacrosse team is noted to be one of the strongest in the field. Their women's track and field division is also known for the powerful way they play.  Roanoke, just like other well-established institutions, has the unique traits that set it apart from other colleges. Students in Roanoke have established traditions that continue to grow as the years passed. The Rock, the Kicking Post, and the Seal are some of the distinct characteristics you will not miss when you visit the college.

The Rock
The Rock was initially a battle between members of the Building Grounds and artists in 1971. It has now become a calendar of events for campus activities. You can see several performances, lectures, and sports activities painted in the ten-foot monument.

The Kicking Post
This 3-foot monument marker is located at the intersection of the Back Quad and Heritage Walk. The obelisk serves as a barrier to keep cars from coming to the Back Quad. They put up the Kicking Post in the 1920s after a car driven by a student almost hit a faculty member. Throughout the years, students who pass by the Kicking Post kick it for good luck.

The Seal
The seal was established in 1995 in front of the Administration Building. The seal aims to commemorate those who helped in the Roanoke Fund. A superstition circulates among students saying that they will fail to graduate if they step on the seal in the Founders Circle.
Roanoke College offers more than 100 student organizations that aim to provide learning experiences and outside of the classroom activities. There are religious, academic, and cultural organizations you can choose from as well as Greek organizations. The Student Government Association is the highest level student organization in Roanoke. It consists of the executive board and the senate.
